Gray's Harbor Radio Group's flagship station, KXRO, first went on the air May 28, 1928, during the period of Prohibition. Started by Seattle, Wash., police officer Roy Omsted, who had a side business as a rum-runner, the station was used to signal runners when it was safe to transport their product.

The next station in the group's lineup was born in 1971 when Dale Gunderson started KDUX in Ocean Shores, Wash., with a "beautiful music" format. KDUX was moved to Aberdeen and became a rock station in the late 1970s.

The two stations were purchased by Pioneer Broadcasting, who operated KXRO as an adult contemporary station and KDUX as a rock station for several years until their purchase by Morris Communications in December 1998. KXRO now serves as the group's news and talk station.

Morris Communications added KXXK, "the Harbor's only live and local country station," and KWOK, ESPN Sports Radio, in April 2001, establishing Gray's Harbor Radio Group as the entity it is today.

The group primarily serves Aberdeen, Wash., but KDUX, now a classic rock format, reaches listeners in Raymond and McCleary, Wash., as well.
