MORRIS
DEPLOYS CONVERA SOFTWARE FOR ELECTRONIC ARCHIVING
Augusta,
Ga. - Morris Communications Corp. has entered into an agreement
with Convera (Nasdaq: CNVR), a leading provider of digital content
management technologies, for the installation and application
of Convera's software solutions for text management. Convera's
RetrievalWare® and FileRoom solutions will be used for extensive
electronic archiving of newspaper and other print content.
Under terms of the agreement,
Morris will make Convera's technology available to its newspapers
and print publications for the purpose of archiving microfilm
and other images. Where installed, the program will allow quick
access to a wide range of historical data from past issues of
that particular publication.
Not only will it become a valuable
tool for reporters and editors, but also will be available to
the public through Internet-based subscriptions. Online readers
will be able to search across and retrieve stories by key word
or date.
"We're streamlining our own archives
and providing a vital source of information to the community
at the same time. The technology will be a bonanza for law firms,
historians, genealogists, students and the general public,"
said Will Morris, president of Morris Communications Corp.
The first Morris-owned property
to install the system is The Augusta Chronicle, which
will convert nearly 1 million pages of information from microfilm
to digital content dating back to 1786.
"Instead of spending hours searching
back issues and microfilm for specific information, users can
go to the appropriate online site, perform targeted searches
and retrieve the information they are looking for within seconds.
This is a real community service," said Chronicle General
Manager Julian Miller.
Miller added that the Chronicle's
archiving system was launched Sept. 4, 2001. The Augusta
Chronicle developed the process to digitize its archives
for public use, and is the first newspaper in the nation to
do so, though the method will soon be the standard, Miller said.
"Convera software will enable
Morris-owned properties to catalogue and index their ever-growing
database of news, advertisements and images, and then deliver
a quality online experience to their web site visitors by providing
faster, more accurate search results," said Ben Plummer, senior
vice president of marketing for Convera. "We look forward to
working with Morris as they make our solution available to their
publications corporate-wide."
